Today we did a little road trip to Westport for the Rusty Scupper Pirate Daze festival.
Didn’t know what to expect from an event hosted by this small fishing town. All I can say is WOW! Completely exceeded my expectations. So much fun for all ages. Reminded me of a small Renaissance Festival. Lots of pirate characters and lots of festival goers dressed up in pirate garb as well. The cannons were crazy — real, freaking cannons.
They didn’t shoot live cannon balls or any other type of projectile, but the charge from the gun powder was so loud my ears were ringing. They really should have warned the spectators, but hey they are pirates after all. Ha! We are in the midst of the great NW Heat Wave of 2021 and it was a little warm in Westport but really not too bad at all.
Stopped in at Little Richards Donuts. After living in Portland, a donut mecca, my standards are very high when it comes to a good fried piece of dough. Little Richards blew me away. They stuck to the classics — raised and fritters. Decided on a Bavarian Cream and holy crap it was good. Almost jumped back in line to grab a 2nd.
Another gem of Westport is the Fishermen’s Boardwalk. Lots of people fishing, mostly for crab. Everyone pulling up crab left and right — many too small to keep. But several people had their crab bucket near full. Witnessed something crazy. A fisherman cast and two seagulls dived to try to steal his bait while it was in the air. The gulls got more than they bargained for — getting caught up in the line. Tense moments while the fisherman tried to cut the birds loose. Both birds were freed. No animals were harmed in the filming of this video — maybe shocked but they looked like they were going to be alright.
Westport also brought back some old childhood memories — charter salmon fishing with my dad and racing the go-carts. Westport — a memorable town and happy to have shared it with Emi.
