With the Vernonia-Astoria two day out n back tour less than a month away, I feel like I am a bit behind on my training. I made it a point to get some more saddle time in this week. I did back to back 20 milers.
And after a rest day, got in a 30 miler.
For now I will stick to just riding the 109 – the Hidden Coast Scenic Byway. The crossing roads between the 109 and 101 just don’t feel as safe to me — much more local/working traffic. Some of the locals are not too friendly to cyclists here. Whereas the 109 seems to mostly be vacationers and they are much more respectful. Even though I would like more route options, it’s not all bad. The 109 has lots of beautiful scenery and lots of rolling hills to make the training miles count. Moclips Highway seems nice too but I would turn around when it joins up with the 101. Most of the 101 in this part of WA has little to no shoulder. I need to do some more route research. If I can find some paved forest roads, even if it requires driving to the start, could be nice.
You know you are out in the country, when you see signs like this:
